FlagCo’s Beacon is a top-of-pole LED fixture that lights the flag from above, replacing ground-mounted uplights. It delivers brighter, more even coverage, uses 60 to 80 percent less energy, and produces virtually no skyward light spill. Every model qualifies as a DarkSky International approved fixture with the integrated visor accessory.

How to Choose a Commercial Flagpole Light

A 4-step guide to matching a Beacon to your pole type, height, and power source.

Four variables determine which Beacon fits your project. Work through them in order.

Step 1

Identify the pole type

External Halyard Revolving, Internal Winch, or Internal Cam Cleat. External Stationary poles do not support a Beacon.

Step 2

Confirm pole height and top diameter

Height drives the lumen tier (800, 1,100, or 1,900). Top diameter determines the mount size (6.5″, 8″, or 10.5″ on internal halyard poles).

Step 3

Select power source

120V AC for grid-connected sites (277V AC supported via step-down transformer), 12V DC for low-voltage systems, 50W or 100W Solar Package for off-grid installations.

Step 4

Specify accessories

Add the integrated visor for DarkSky International approval, choose Beacon Plus tier for higher lumens, and confirm BABA documentation needs.

Commercial Flagpole Lighting FAQ

Questions architects, contractors, facility managers, and federal buyers ask before specifying a commercial flagpole light.

What is the difference between top-of-pole flagpole lighting and aviation obstruction lighting?

Top-of-pole flagpole lighting illuminates the flag from above with a downward-projecting LED fixture mounted beneath the truck or ornament. FlagCo's Beacon is a top-of-pole flagpole light; it is DarkSky International approved and designed to illuminate the flag without light pollution.

Aviation obstruction lighting is a red FAA L810-class warning light that marks tall structures (200 ft and above) for aircraft. The two are distinct product categories with different regulatory frameworks and use cases. FlagCo stocks FAA-grade aviation obstruction lights as a separate product line from the Beacon; a Beacon does not satisfy FAA obstruction marking requirements, so specify the obstruction light separately when a project calls for it.

How many lumens do I need for a commercial flagpole light?

The FlagCo Beacon Series offers three lumen tiers matched to pole height and flag size:

800 lumens for poles 20 to 35 ft (suits flags up to 6 x 10 ft);
1,100 lumens (Beacon Plus) for poles 40 to 50 ft (suits flags up to 10 x 15 ft);
1,900 lumens (Quad Plus) for poles 55 to 100 ft (suits flags up to 30 x 50 ft).

Lumen requirements scale with pole height (greater distance from fixture to flag) and flag area (more surface to illuminate). Specify a higher lumen tier if the installation is in a high-ambient-light environment, such as an urban core or near stadium lighting.

Are FlagCo flagpole lights DarkSky International approved?

Yes. All FlagCo Beacon models qualify as DarkSky International approved fixtures when specified with the integrated visor accessory. The visor directs light onto the flag and prevents skyward light spill. DarkSky International (formerly the International Dark-Sky Association) approval is the recognized standard for fixtures that minimize light pollution. Approval status matters on government, university, conservation, and coastal-zone projects that specify DarkSky compliance. Learn more at darksky.org.

Are FlagCo flagpole lights BABA compliant?

Yes. FlagCo Beacons are manufactured and assembled in Acworth, Georgia and qualify under both BABA (Build America, Buy America Act, for IIJA-funded infrastructure projects) and BAA (Buy American Act, for direct federal agency purchases). FlagCo provides domestic content declaration letters to support verification during project closeout or audit. Solar, AC, or DC, which power source should I choose for a flagpole light?

120V AC is the standard for grid-connected sites and most new commercial construction; it requires conduit and an electrical connection at the pole base. 277V AC commercial-building service is also supported via a step-down transformer, useful on projects where 277V is the available branch voltage.

12V DC is used when an existing low-voltage system is in place or with a step-down transformer.

50W or 100W Solar Package is self-contained, includes panel and battery, and operates dusk-to-dawn automatically. Solar is the only option for off-grid sites and eliminates trenching and ongoing electrical service.

Can I add a Beacon flagpole light to an existing pole?

Yes. Retrofits are supported across all major pole types: External Halyard Revolving, Internal Winch, and Internal Cam Cleat. The Beacon mounts at the top of the pole and replaces the standard truck and finial assembly. Retrofitting requires lowering the pole or working from a lift, removing the existing truck, installing the Beacon mount, and routing the electrical line down through the pole (for AC and DC) or installing the solar panel mount (for solar). Which FlagCo Beacon model fits my pole?

Selection depends on three variables: pole type, pole height, and pole-top diameter.

External Halyard Revolving poles: External Beacon for 20 to 35 ft, External Beacon Plus for 40 to 100 ft.
Internal Halyard poles (both Internal Winch and Internal Cam Cleat): 6.5 in, 8 in, 10.5 in, or 14 in Internal Halyard Beacons matched to pole height and pole-top diameter (3 in, 3.5 in, 4 in, or 5 in+).

Will a commercial flagpole light work in a high-wind or hurricane zone?

Yes. FlagCo Beacons are tested and rated for the same wind speeds as FlagCo flagpoles, following the NAAMM FP 1001-07 rating ladder (85, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 150, and 170 mph). The aluminum housing is designed to withstand sustained high-wind loading; the LED elements are sealed and rated IP65 against rain and debris. For projects in ASCE 7-10 Special Wind Regions or coastal hurricane zones, use FlagCo's Wind Speed Tool to look up the basic wind speed for the project zip code and select the matching pole and Beacon rating.
