Commercial Flagpole Types

FlagCo manufactures six commercial flagpole types across two halyard systems, available from 15 to 80 feet. External halyard poles use an external rope and cleat; they are available as stationary (fixed flag position) or revolving (flag rotates 360 degrees to reduce wrap and extend flag life). Internal halyard poles route the halyard inside the pole shaft for vandal resistance, accessed through a milled access door with stainless steel hinge and cam lock. Reinforced variants of both internal types provide additional structural capacity for coastal, hurricane-prone, and other high-wind installations. Each type is documented in the commercial flagpole cut sheet generated by the tool above. For help choosing a beacon for your pole type, see FlagCo's Beacon Selector.

Wind Speed Ratings: External Revolving Flagpoles

Wind speed capacity (mph) for FlagCo external revolving flagpoles by height, butt diameter, and wall thickness. "With Flag" is the rated wind speed with the recommended nylon flag attached, which is the value used for NAAMM FP 1001-07 compliance. "Unflagged" is the bare pole structural capacity. Nylon is the standard flag material used for wind load calculations; polyester flags produce higher wind loads due to heavier fabric weight. All ratings determined per ASCE 7-10 (3-second gust at 33 feet above ground, 50-year mean recurrence interval). To look up the ASCE 7-10 wind speed for your project location, use FlagCo's Wind Speed Tool.

Flagpole Foundation and Set Depth Specifications

All FlagCo ground-set commercial flagpoles are installed using a steel ground sleeve embedded in a concrete foundation. The pole is inserted into the sleeve after the concrete cures. Set depths (burial depth) follow NAAMM FP 1001-07 standards and increase with pole height. The overall manufactured length of the pole equals the exposed height plus the set depth shown below. A spun aluminum flash collar (standard) or cast aluminum flash collar (upgrade) covers the gap between the pole and sleeve at grade level, sealed with exterior-grade silicone sealant. All ground sleeves include a factory-welded grounding provision for lightning protection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Flagpole Cut Sheets

What wind speed rating do I need for a commercial flagpole?
Your flagpole must be rated for the ASCE 7-10 basic wind speed at your location, measured as a 3-second gust at 33 feet above ground (50-year mean recurrence interval). NAAMM FP 1001-07 defines standard flagpole ratings at 85, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 150, and 170 mph. FlagCo manufactures poles rated from 85 to 170 mph depending on type, height, diameter, and wall thickness. Use FlagCo's Wind Speed Tool to look up the ASCE 7-10 wind speed for any U.S. zip code.
What is the difference between external halyard and internal halyard flagpoles?
External halyard flagpoles (stationary and revolving) use an external rope and cleat to raise and lower the flag. They are available in heights from 15 to 80 feet. Internal halyard flagpoles route the halyard inside the pole shaft, accessed through a hinged door with a cam lock. FlagCo offers two internal halyard systems: Internal Winch (available 20 to 80 feet, uses a stainless steel cable with a geared winch mechanism) and Internal Cam Cleat (available 20 to 35 feet, uses a rope halyard with a cam cleat locking device). Internal halyard systems reduce vandalism and unauthorized lowering of the flag.
How deep should a ground-set flagpole be buried?
Set depths vary by pole height per NAAMM FP 1001-07: 15 and 20 ft poles require 2 ft, 25 ft requires 2.5 ft, 30 ft requires 3 ft, 35 ft requires 3.5 ft, 40 ft requires 4 ft, 45 ft requires 4.5 ft, 50 ft requires 5 ft, 60 ft requires 6 ft, 70 ft requires 7 ft, and 80 ft requires 8 ft. The overall pole length equals the exposed height plus the set depth. All ground-set poles ship with a steel ground sleeve.
What flag size should I fly on my commercial flagpole?
Recommended flag sizes by pole height: 15 ft uses 3'x5', 20 ft uses 4'x6', 25 ft uses 5'x8', 30 to 35 ft uses 6'x10', 40 to 45 ft uses 8'x12', 50 to 55 ft uses 10'x15', 60 to 75 ft uses 12'x18', and 80 ft uses 15'x25'. Wind ratings published by FlagCo are calculated with the recommended nylon flag size attached. Nylon is the standard material for wind load calculations; if flying a polyester flag (which is heavier), the effective wind rating may be lower due to increased wind load on the pole.
What aluminum alloy are FlagCo flagpoles made from?
FlagCo flagpole shafts are 6063-T6 aluminum per ASTM B 221, with a minimum tensile strength of 30,000 psi and minimum yield strength of 25,000 psi. All poles are cone-tapered. Structural blind rivets are 5056-H32 aluminum, 3/16-inch diameter, flush countersunk. Design follows the Aluminum Design Manual and NAAMM FP 1001-07.
What is a flagpole beacon and when is one required?
A flagpole beacon is an aviation obstruction light mounted at the top of the pole, replacing the standard truck and finial assembly. Beacons may be required by the FAA for poles near airports, or used to illuminate the flag for nighttime display per U.S. Flag Code. FlagCo beacons are Intertek (ETL) certified and available in 110V AC and solar-powered configurations. External revolving poles support external beacons. Internal winch poles support IH beacons sized by pole top diameter. Cam cleat poles support cam beacons. External stationary poles do not support beacon installation. Use FlagCo's Beacon Selector to find the right beacon for your pole.
What finishes are available for commercial flagpoles?
FlagCo flagpoles are available in three finishes: Mill (natural aluminum, no coating), Clear Anodized (satin finish with corrosion protection), and Powder Coated (custom RAL or manufacturer-standard colors for architectural matching). All finishes are applied to the 6063-T6 aluminum shaft.
What is the difference between a spun aluminum and cast aluminum flash collar?
The flash collar covers the gap between the flagpole shaft and the ground sleeve at grade level. FlagCo's standard spun aluminum flash collar is formed from sheet aluminum on a spinning lathe. The upgrade cast aluminum flash collar is poured into a mold for a heavier, more durable profile. Both are sealed with exterior-grade silicone sealant at the grade line.
What is an ASCE 7-10 Special Wind Region and how does it affect flagpole selection?
ASCE 7-10 designates Special Wind Regions in areas where terrain features (mountains, gorges, ocean promontories) can cause localized wind speeds higher than what the standard wind speed map shows. These regions are marked with dashed red borders on ASCE 7-10 wind maps. If your project is in a Special Wind Region, the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) may require a higher wind speed rating than the map value. Always verify site-specific wind requirements with the local building department before specifying a flagpole in these areas.
Where are FlagCo flagpoles manufactured?
FlagCo is a veteran-owned commercial flagpole manufacturer based in Acworth, Georgia (3600 Cantrell Industrial Ct, Acworth, GA 30101). FlagCo designs, manufactures, and sells commercial-grade flagpoles, beacons (aviation obstruction lights), and related hardware to contractors, facility managers, government agencies, and authorized dealers nationwide. Browse FlagCo's product catalog to see the full line of poles, beacons, and accessories.
