Flagpole Christmas tree size comes down to your pole’s height above the ground: a 20 ft pole takes the 20 ft Fairybell tree, a 25 or 30 ft pole takes the 26 ft tree, and a 35 ft pole takes the 33 ft tree. Measure from the ground to the top of the pole, not the pole’s overall length.

Key Takeaways

  1. Pick the tree closest to your pole’s height, no more than about a foot taller. Fairybell’s FAQ says the tree does not need to be hoisted all the way to the top, so a shorter tree just hangs a little lower.
  2. A 20 ft pole takes the 20 ft tree, a 25 or 30 ft pole the 26 ft tree, and a 35 ft pole the 33 ft tree.
  3. Size to the height above ground. A FlagCo 30 ft pole is 33 ft long overall because 3 ft of it sits in the ground, so it takes the 26 ft tree.
  4. Fairybell’s instructions say to lower the tree at wind force 6 or higher. On the Beaufort scale that starts at 25 mph, no matter how high your pole is rated.
  5. Fairybell says setup takes 30 minutes or less with no tools. The trees run about $370 to $670, including the app-controlled Smart Magic.
  6. It works on external halyard poles and on internal halyard (cam cleat and winch) poles.

What is the right flagpole Christmas tree size for my pole?

The right flagpole Christmas tree size is the tree closest to your pole’s height, as long as it is no more than about a foot taller. Fairybell’s FAQ says the tree does not need to be hoisted all the way to the top, and to keep every LED off the ground, so a tree a few feet shorter than the pole simply hangs a little lower. About a foot over is fine: our 26 ft listing calls for a 25 to 30 ft pole.

Fairybell sizes its trees in meters, and US sellers round them to feet. The 20 ft tree is 6 m (about 19 ft 8 in), the 26 ft tree is 8 m (about 26 ft 3 in, sold by some US dealers as a 25 ft tree), and the 33 ft tree is 10 m (about 32 ft 10 in).

Tree specs come from the Fairybell listings. The pole-to-tree matching is FlagCo’s. Fairybell’s FAQ advises a tree one size smaller than your pole and says the tree does not need to reach the top; Fairybell’s own pages for the 20 ft trees call for a 20 ft pole. For current availability, see the flagpole Christmas tree lights page.

900 or 1,200 LEDs on the 20 ft tree?

Both 20 ft classic trees are the same height. The 900-LED tree spreads about 10 ft across and the 1,200-LED tree about 11 ft, with a third more lights. Warm white looks like a classic lit tree; multicolor reads as a party.

What is the Fairybell Smart Magic tree?

The Fairybell Smart Magic is a 20 ft flagpole Christmas tree with 1,152 LEDs that you control from your phone. The app switches it between warm white, multicolor and custom color scenes, runs preset lighting modes, and can sync the lights to music. It mounts, stakes down and plugs in like the classic trees and fits the same poles as the 20 ft classic tree.

How do I measure my flagpole for a Christmas tree?

Measure the flagpole from the ground to the top of the pole, because that exposed height is what the size rule uses. A commercial flagpole is longer than it looks: part of the shaft is set into a ground sleeve below grade, and that buried length never shows. A cut sheet lists both the set depth and the total length, so make sure you are reading the height above ground.

FlagCo ground-set poles bury 2 ft of a 15 or 20 ft pole and 3.5 ft of a 35 ft pole.

FlagCo pole heightSet in the groundOverall lengthTree to buy
15 ft2 ft17 ftCall us
20 ft2 ft22 ft20 ft tree
25 ft2.5 ft27.5 ft26 ft tree
30 ft3 ft33 ft26 ft tree, not the 33 ft
35 ft3.5 ft38.5 ft33 ft tree (check availability)
The 30 ft trap: a FlagCo 30 ft pole is 33 ft long on paper, but only 30 ft of it stands above grade. A 33 ft tree would stand about 3 ft taller than that, so the 30 ft pole takes the 26 ft tree. Poles from other makers can set deeper or shallower, so put a tape on the part you can see.

Will a flagpole Christmas tree work on my type of flagpole?

A Fairybell tree works on both external and internal halyard flagpoles, because it raises on the halyard the way a flag does.

  • External halyard poles (stationary and revolving): the rope is on the outside of the pole. Raise the tree up the pole from its center point, like a flag. FlagCo external stationary flagpoles run 15 to 35 ft and external revolving flagpoles 20 to 80 ft.
  • Internal halyard poles (cam cleat and winch): the rope or cable runs inside the shaft behind a locked access door. The tree works on these poles too: raise it on the halyard the same way you raise the flag.

How do you put a Christmas tree on a flagpole?

Fairybell says setup takes no more than 30 minutes and needs no tools: hoist the tree from its center point, spread the strands around the pole, stake each leg into the ground, then connect the power. Fairybell’s setup steps, in short:

  1. Hoist. Raise the tree up the flagpole from the tree’s center point, the same way you raise a flag.
  2. Drape. Spread the lights around the pole and snap the far ends together.
  3. Stake. Peg each leg of the tree into the ground in a circle around the pole.
  4. Power. Connect the cable junction set to the base of each leg, attach the transformer, and run power to the tree.

Plug it in. The low-voltage transformer connects to household power.
  • In the box: the light tree, a connection cable, the transformer, ground pins, an orange distance belt and the manual. The flagpole is not included.
  • Base: the strands spread into a circle about 10 to 11 ft across on the 20 ft classic trees, 12 ft on the 26 ft tree and 13 ft on the 33 ft tree. Keep that circle clear of shrubs and sprinkler heads where the stakes go, and keep every LED off the ground.
  • Power: a low-voltage transformer connects to household power, and a timer can go in between.

How much wind can a flagpole Christmas tree take?

Fairybell’s instructions say to lower the tree at wind force 6 or higher. The National Weather Service lists Beaufort force 6 as a strong breeze, 25 to 31 mph, so bring the tree down when winds reach 25 mph. Check the forecast through the season.

Wind

Your pole’s wind rating is not the tree’s

A FlagCo commercial flagpole is rated for design wind speeds of 85 to 170 mph under NAAMM FP 1001-07. That rating is calculated for a flag; it does not account for the added load of a light tree. The tree has its own, much lower limit, so a pole that rides out a storm is no reason to leave the tree up in one.

How do you take down and store a flagpole Christmas tree?

Let the tree dry completely before you pack it, so the strands are ready for next season. Fairybell’s instructions:

  • Make sure the tree is completely dry before you pack it.
  • Lay it out flat on the ground and tie the orange ribbons around several sections of the strands so it comes out untangled next year.
  • Remove the intermediate cable before you pack the tree into the box.
  • Lower the bottom end (plugs and elastics) into the box first and finish with the hook on top.
  • Store the box in a clean, dry place.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas tree fits a 25 ft flagpole?
The 26 ft Fairybell tree, which some US dealers sell as a 25 ft tree. It is 8 m, about a foot taller than a 25 ft pole, and our 26 ft listing calls for a 25 to 30 ft pole. Measure your pole from the ground to the top, not by its overall length.
Can I put the 33 ft tree on a 30 ft flagpole?
No. The 33 ft tree would stand about 3 ft taller than a 30 ft pole. A 30 ft pole takes the 26 ft tree, even when its spec sheet shows a 33 ft overall length.
Does the tree have to reach the top of the pole?
No. Fairybell says the tree does not need to be hoisted all the way to the top, which is why a tree a few feet shorter than the pole works. Keep every LED off the ground.
Does a flagpole Christmas tree work on an internal halyard pole?
Yes. A Fairybell tree works on internal halyard (cam cleat and winch) poles as well as external halyard poles. Raise it on the halyard the same way you raise the flag.
How long does a flagpole Christmas tree take to set up?
Fairybell says 30 minutes or less, with no tools. Hoist it, spread the strands, stake the legs, and connect the transformer.
Can I put a flagpole Christmas tree on a timer?
Yes. The listings say the transformer can connect to household power with a timer in between.
When should I lower a flagpole Christmas tree?
Fairybell’s instructions say to lower the tree at wind force 6 or higher. The National Weather Service lists Beaufort force 6 as a strong breeze, 25 to 31 mph, so bring the tree down when winds reach 25 mph.
Does the tree come with a flagpole?
No. The tree hangs on the flagpole you already have. If you need a pole, FlagCo makes external and internal halyard flagpoles from 15 to 80 ft.
