Black American Heritage Flag 3’x5′ Basic Polyester

The Black American Heritage Flag is a symbol of Black American pride, history, and hope. It was designed in 1967 by Melvin Charles and Gleason T. Jackson and first raised at Newark City Hall in New Jersey on March 5, 1967. Created during the Civil Rights era, it was meant to give Black Americans a flag of their own, one that honored their ancestry, acknowledged the legacy of slavery, and celebrated their contributions to the United States. It is also widely searched for as the African American heritage flag.

What the Black American Heritage Flag means

The flag has one diagonal black stripe centered between two red stripes. On the black stripe, a golden wreath of fig leaves encircles a blunted Moorish sword.

The history of the flag

Melvin Charles conceived the flag during the height of the Civil Rights movement, after noticing that nearly every group had a flag to carry at parades except Black Americans. Working with Gleason T. Jackson, he designed a flag meant to honor Black ancestry and inspire hope for the future. It was officially raised at Newark City Hall on March 5, 1967. In the years since, it has been flown at cultural events, schools, and community gatherings, and it has seen renewed recognition as a symbol of Black American heritage.
