Your flag is a symbol of pride and respect and like anything exposed to the elements, it needs proper care to stay beautiful. Whether it’s waving on your porch or standing tall in front of your business, a few simple maintenance habits can dramatically extend its life.

How Long Should a Flag Last? Flag Care Tips

Even the highest-quality outdoor flags will eventually show signs of wear. Wind, rain, sunlight, and dirt all take their toll. On average, nylon and cotton flags last about 4 to 6 months with regular use.

If your flag flies 24 hours a day, its lifespan may drop to about 3 months, depending on weather and the age of your flagpole hardware, so rotating between two flags throughout the year is a smart way to keep them both in great shape. When one is being cleaned or repaired, the other can proudly take its place.

Flag Care Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Repair early. Fix frayed edges or small tears before they worsen.
  • Wash gently. Use cool water and mild detergent to remove dirt and buildup.
  • Dry completely. Lay flat or hang to air-dry before folding to avoid mildew.
  • Store properly. Keep your flag in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.
  • Iron carefully. Use the correct heat setting for your fabric type to remove wrinkles.

Don’t:

  • Fold or store your flag while wet or damp — it can cause mildew and damage.
  • Fly your flag during harsh weather like heavy rain, snow, or strong winds.
  • Use harsh chemicals or softeners, which can weaken fibers over time.

How to Clean a Flag

For Synthetic Flags (Nylon or Polyester)

  1. Gently brush off loose dirt or dust.
  1. Place your flag in the washing machine by itself.
  1. Add a mild detergent — skip fabric softeners or bleach.
  1. Wash with cold water, using the delicate cycle.
  1. Never use a dryer. Hang or lay flat to air dry and use a cool iron if needed.

For Natural Fiber Flags (Cotton or Wool)

  1. Shake off surface dirt.
  1. Fill a tub with lukewarm water and a small amount of oxygen-based bleach.
  1. Submerge the flag and let it soak for up to 4 hours.
  1. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.
  1. Air dry flat or hanging, then iron on a hot setting to smooth wrinkles.

Outdoor Flag Care Tips

The U.S. Flag Code states you should fly your flag only during daylight hours, unless it is properly illuminated at night.
If you’d like to display your flag around the clock, consider adding a flagpole lighting system such as the Flagpole Beacon® to keep it respectfully visible after sunset.

Indoor Flag Care

For indoor flags, dry cleaning is the safest and most effective option.
Some dry cleaners even offer free flag cleaning services in June and July — it’s worth checking local listings in your area during those months.

Proper Flag Disposal

When a flag becomes too worn, faded, or torn to be repaired, it should be retired with dignity according to the U.S. Flag Code.
Many local organizations, such as American Legion or VFW posts, conduct respectful flag retirement ceremonies throughout the year.

Keep It Proud, Keep It Flying

A well-cared-for flag reflects the same pride and respect it symbolizes. With just a little attention — regular cleaning, smart storage, and timely repairs — your flag can stay beautiful for many seasons to come.
