About the Georgia State Flag

Georgia didn’t adopt its first official flag until 1879, even though the state joined the Union in 1788 as one of the original 13 colonies.

During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Georgia flew an unofficial flag featuring the state’s coat of arms on a blue to be in accordance to the 1861 law, requiring all deployed militia to have a regimental flag with the state coat of arms and regiment name.

Since 1879, Georgia has had 7 official state flags with the current flag being adopted in May 2003, after a vote including the public; and as a resolution to controversy from the 1956 and 2001 flag renditions that incorporated elements of the Confederate Battle flag.
