About the California State Flag
A tribute to strength and independence, the “Bear Flag” of California originates as a battle flag. First flow during the Bear Flag Revolt (1846), a declaration of California independence from Mexico as a Republic; then as a statement of secession during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
While the layout of the flag has changed, all versions of the flag feature the grizzly bear and red California lone star, symbolizing sovereignty.
In 1911, the California State Legislature adopted the flag and Governor Hiram Johnson signed into law as the official state flag of California with design specifications. In 1953, the design and specifications were standardized, and flag display protocol was adopted.
Flag protocol officially states when, where and how the flag is to be displayed, “vertically it is rotated 90 degrees clockwise such that the bear and star face upward and red stripe is on the left.”
